It's a dirty job... But someone has to do it!!!

All the friends arrived in small groups at the Tuxla airport oblige me to many trips, having only one off-road vehicle. In the meantime the speleo course is going very well.

Yesterday 15 Mexican students faced their first cave, the Cueva del Naranjo. The abundant rains of the last months have swelled the inside river. At some point it becomes a syphon and stops the crossing scheduled (we don't think a course of underwater speleology would be appropriate).

Here we are at the ranchito. We're loaded with material, food and water, all we need to set our base camp. We start our work immediately...someone tidy up the kitchen, someone takes the tents apart, someone arrange the store, and someone becomes Mc Gyver! Equipped with pliers and american tape in a few hours he repairs the heating, installs the solar panel and restores the electrical system of the house. Yes: we have hot water at the expedition! More motivated (and clean), we begin the first step of our mission in Chiapas.
The rancho is now ready to welcome the new students of the basic course of speleology organized for the boys of the Cardenas colony and for the engineering students of Cintalapa.

The telephone is ringing. The number on the display begins with +88. It's one of the satellite phones Intermatica we use for our expedition. Here they are: the Mexicans.
"Hello?"

On the other side the familiar voice of Tullio keep me up with the Chiapas expedition. He's happy. Everything is going well, he says, and the excitement is high. The speleology course for the colonies guys has started: they're fifteen, all in their twenties.

Preparativi a Cintalapa

Oggi ci siamo dedicati principalmente all'organizzazione logistica della spedizione.
La giornata è iniziata con un'ottima colazione in casa Ramos seguita da un briefing in cui abbiamo pianificato quelle che saranno le principali attività dei prossimi giorni.
Successivamente ci siamo “divertiti” a fare la spesa e a perderci fra le viuzze colorate di Cintalapa. Anche i locali si sono divertiti ad osservare gli stranieri indaffarati nella ricerca degli oggetti più strani: palette di plastica non troppo grandi, non troppo piccole; tazze e piatti leggeri ma resistenti; centinaia di batterie (abbiamo esaurito le scorte di tutta la città); repellente per le zanzare non in crema ma in spray.

Progetto Chiapas. Nuova spedizione

Una spedizione tira l’altra. Potrebbe essere questo il motto della lunga serie di missioni nelle foreste e nelle grotte del Rio La venta, iniziata oltre vent’anni fa. In Messico abbiamo tanti progetti, ma quello sul Chiapas ha radici profonde ed estese ramificazioni. Laggiù ormai non facciamo soltanto esplorazione, ma insieme alle popolazioni locali stiamo portando avanti un discorso più ampio, che, coinvolgendo i più giovani, si propone di gettare il seme dell’amore per le grotte e per la natura.

In quest’ottica stiamo collaborando con la Reserva de la Biosfera Selva El Ocote e con il Municipio di Cintalapa de Figueroa, coi quali abbiamo stipulato accordi di collaborazione pluriennale che prevedono esplorazione, ricerca scientifica, divulgazione, didattica e nuove iniziative editoriali.

El Ocote

Prende il via ufficialmente oggi una nuova spedizione esplorativa nella selva El Ocote (Chiapas, Messico). Un piccolo gruppo ha infatti portato a termine oggi i contatti d'obbligo con la Reserva e – nonostante le piogge ancora copiose – si appresta ad entrare in foresta nei prossimi giorni.
Raggiungeranno una sorgente individuata durante le esplorazioni del 2004 per sistemare un primo campo base, dal quale prenderanno il via alcune vie di avvicinamento verso l'Ombligo tese ad esplorare alcune linee di fratture osservate sulle foto aeree.
Questa prima squadra rimarrà in selva per circa una settimana, fin quando cioé non verranno raggiunti da un nutrito gruppo di rinforzo che concentrerà le esplorazioni sulla riva sinistra del canyon del Rio La Venta.
