Prime operazioni a Kronio

Starting Kronio Project

krStarting today, December 5th, and continuing for two weeks, in the thermal caves of Sciacca (Ag, Sicily), the first operational phase of the Kronio Project sees in a leading role La Venta Geographical Exploration Association, Eugenio Boegan Caving Commission from Trieste and the Monuments and Fine Arts Office of Agrigento.

The main goal is the exploration and study of the caves that open on Mount Calogero, better known as Kronio, a hill of about 400 meters that dominates the village of Sciacca. The research, in this first stage, is centered on the karstic complex called “Stufe (stoves) di S. Calogero” and its vapor phenomena, regularly visited from the stone age and then in the Roman period for therapeutic purposes. Inside the galleries, actually, traces of burial and big terracotta vases (Phytoi) have been found, dating back to the Neolithic. So the speleo-archeological exploration will begin right from the “stufe”, toward the deepest and unexplored arms of the cave. The archeological research is one of the main point of the project.

Explorations on Mount Pelmo goes on

Sulla cresta del Monte PelmoMount Pelmo, Dolomites. During a quick research expedition in September 2011, a group of geologists and speleologists of La Venta geographical exploration association, together with the sculptor Mauro “Thunder” Olivotto, spotted a possible track of dinosaur footprints on the north-west side of the mountain, over 3040 meters on sea level. Probably it is one of the highest dinosaur track found in Europe.
The interest for this finding and the will to explore more caves and abysses in this mountain lead to the organization of a larger expedition, overtaken from the 21st to the 23rd and the 28th September of this year and supported once more by La Venta association, by the CAI Padua speleological group, by Treviso cave group and by Crema Sport Padova. 14 speleologists, among them the geologists Francesco Sauro (discoverer of the track in 2011) and Laura Gandolfo, have been helitransported in two high camps, one on the north-west and one inside the Caregon, under the principal peak of the mountain.

In the Russian style!

Click per ingrandireComing back is always a pleasure, but it can be special if you find yourself moved by the sound of the coffee machine or if you almost cry parking two minutes far from a cave; however the explorations in Boysun Tau are like this, deprivation and massacre.
The Russian style: walking for three days to reach the camp is not a problem, neither it is getting back and forth to carry the food sacks (“a sack is enough for 17 speleos for one day, or one speleo for 17 days” – Russian maths, and they also pretend it’s a joke). No, they are the real problem, the children of the steppe, always ahead drawing one more sack, or beginning another trip; you tell yourself they’re kids – average age 25 - and then Evgenii, 53 and 10 camps in the zone included some trips in Boy Bulok, with two more bags on his back, goes past. Russian speleology...
